Does publishing your scientific research feel out of reach?

With many barriers to entry, even the most dedicated early-career researchers struggle to publish their work:

Lack of structured writing support

Often being the “only one” in the room

Teaching is often prioritized over research

Few experienced mentors to lean on

It’s easy to doubt your expertise when publishing scientific research seems reserved for the privileged few.

African voices are underrepresented in scientific conversations, and this needs to change.

Your research matters, and it’s time to get it published.

Providing you with tools and confidence.

At Rethé, we believe in your expertise. Your work and your voice matter. We’ve lived the experience of being the “only one” in the room, of not seeing our voices reflected in scientific literature, and of wondering if our ideas would ever make it past draft form. We created Rethé to change that story for you.

Led by award-winning data scientist Dr. Elaine O. Nsoesie (pictured above center), Rethé provides the tools, training, and mentorship researchers in Africa need to publish their work with confidence. Since 2019, we’ve partnered with universities and organizations across Africa to support more than 1,000 early-career researchers through hands-on workshops, digital resources, and community-centered fellowships.

How Rethé amplifies your voice…

Scientific Writing Resources

Rethé offers accessible, practical resources for scientific research and writing.

Our 13-part video series, developed in partnership with Data Science Nigeria, introduces early-career researchers to core topics in scientific writing, research ethics, and publishing.

Each video includes contextualized examples relevant to researchers in Africa. Topics include:

  • Introduction to scientific research

  • Research and data ethics

  • Conducting a literature review

  • Writing different sections of a scientific paper

  • Choosing the right journal

  • Understanding the publication process

  • Responding to rejection

In-Person Writing Workshops

To complement our digital resources, we host in-person writing workshops in partnership with universities and research institutions across Africa.

These five-day retreats are designed to help researchers complete and submit scientific papers for publication. Workshops are facilitated by senior researchers from African institutions and Rethé mentors.

Participants are eligible to attend once they have:

  1. Completed the full video series and a short quiz

  2. Submitted a draft manuscript

During the workshop, participants share their drafts, receive peer feedback, and work with facilitators on editorial improvements. Together, they develop clear, measurable goals to submit their papers within six months.

Ongoing support continues after the retreat. Facilitators check in every three months to review progress and provide feedback on draft revisions.

Research Fellowships

We also offer fellowships that support early-career researchers in building their research, writing, and career development skills.

Our flagship program, the Data Science to Advance Women’s Health Fellowship, launched in 2024 in collaboration with Data Science Africa and funded by the Gates Foundation.

This nine-month fellowship serves two cohorts of twenty women: the first from West and Central Africa, and the second from East and Southern Africa. The fellowship includes:

  • Mentorship from leading experts in data science and health research

  • Participation in the Data Science Africa Summer School and Workshop

  • Scientific writing training

  • Professional development to increase research impact

  • Support for publishing research findings

  • A collaborative environment focused on advancing women’s health through AI and data science
